Sunderland have potentially been handed a huge bonus in their current pursuit for an attacker in January.

The Black Cats are still in the hunt to add attackers to their side before the January transfer window slams shut.

With Sunderland’s injury list stretching far and wide, with Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson’s absences certainly causing trouble for French boss Regis Le Bris, he has made it abruptly clear that he needs extra back up in the final third in regards to recruitment.

Despite Sunderland looking to bring in both Tom Cannon and Ben Brereton Diaz from Premier League strugglers Leicester City and Southampton respectively, the Black Cats look set to lose out on the pair, who are on track to join fellow promotion candidates Sheffield United.

They have also explored the options around signing Wilson Isidor on a permanent basis, with the attacker proving crucial during his loan spell so far on Wearside. It now looks like the Black Cats may have been handed a boost in their pursuit for the Frenchman.

Imminent Zenit St Petersburg signing could hand Sunderland boost in Wilson Isidor deal

Plenty of ambiguity lies around any potential deal for Isidor, and whilst Sunderland are certainly keen on retaining the services of the Frenchman on a permanent deal, it is still somewhat unclear whether Kristjaan Speakman inserted an optional buy clause into the move, with Alan Nixon previously suggested that there isn’t one.

Nonetheless, Sunderland’s current quest to sign their in-form forward could be made that much easier because of his parent club Zenit St Petersburg bringing in extra bodies in the frontline.

Per Fabrizio Romano on X, Zenit are set to sign attacker Luiz Henrique, a Brazilian that can be utilised anywhere across the frontline.

This will potentially free up space for Zenit to sanction a move for Isidor, that is if a release clause isn’t in place. Alternatively, it could be a sign that the Russian side are planning for life without the current Sunderland loanee.

Wilson Isidor deal must be priority for Kristjaan Speakman this January

It is clear that Sunderland are calling out for a Championship-proven goalscorer, not just in the short-term, but to serve them for the foreseeable future. Isidor has already proven this season that he can be that man.

The Frenchman has bagged an average of one goal every three games, which is a solid record for a player with no experience of English football prior to the 2024/25 campaign, and the fact that he is available for a small fee makes it a no-brainer for Speakman.

He simply is the best out-and-out striker that Sunderland have had since the days of Ross Stewart, when not injured, and he is someone that the Black Cats must cherish.
