Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has made a statement over where the Black Cats must strengthen in the January transfer window.

The Black Cats are still very much in the hunt to add players to their squad before the January transfer window comes to its conclusion.

Sunderland have already brought in the blockbuster signing of Enzo Le Fee on loan from Roma, and it already looks to be a fantastic piece of business after his solid debut.

Following the Le Fee deal, Sunderland looked at bringing Tom Cannon to Wearside after his loan spell at Stoke City was cut short. They were also interested in a deal to sign Ben Brereton Diaz on loan from Premier League strugglers Southampton, but they appear to have been beaten to both signings by fellow promotion candidate Sheffield United.

Nevertheless, the Sunderland boss is remaining very clear where he is looking to improve in his squad and it is up to Kristjaan Speakman to meet those demands.

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris highlights necessity of attacking reinforcements

Despite missing out on both Cannon and Brereton Diaz, French boss Regis Le Bris is still keen on adding to his ranks a player that can slot in at the ‘top of the pitch’.

It is an area that Sunderland have had trouble with in regards to absentees and injuries, as well as players leaving, including the recently departed Aaron Connolly.

Per Sunderland Echo, Le Bris highlighted exactly what sort of player, as he said: “It’s possible, but I think many teams in the Championship and other leagues are searching for this player who can make a difference.

“We need a bit more depth in our squad at the top of the pitch. It’s an option for us, but we’ll see in the next two weeks before the end of the transfer window.”

The Black Cats are already looking at their next target, who is Westerlo attacker Matija Frigan.

Kristjaan Speakman has no choice but to match Regis Le Bris ambition this January

It is clear that, whilst Le Bris is content using his current squad and is not the sort of coach to demand excessive signings, there is a clear need to bring in forwards up until the window’s conclusion.

Both Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda has shone this term, but extra reinforcements would certainly help in regards to depth, and that should be a necessity as opposed to a luxury for Le Bris to be handed.

With Le Bris achieving a brilliant first half of the season with somewhat limited resources in comparison to the other promotion hunting sides, Speakman should see this as a golden opportunity to back the boss and help him in his brilliant job that he has done so far.
