Sunderland youngster Chris Rigg has enjoyed a remarkable rise from academy product to first-team regular, and his market value certainly reflects that.

Under the guidance of sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, Sunderland have become recognised for their youth-first footballing philosophy.

Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland squad is littered with some of the brightest footballing prospects in the country, with two of the standouts being Jobe Bellingham and Dan Neil.

Dynamic midfielder Bellingham could follow in the footsteps of brother Jude at Dortmund, with a move on the cards this summer.

Fellow midfielder Neil is also wanted by Italian giants Roma after the Academy of Light graduate’s stellar season so far.

However, it is that duo’s midfield compatriot Chris Rigg who has enjoyed the most momentous rise, with the in-demand Sunderland youngster’s value growing at a staggering rate.

Sunderland star Chris Rigg’s staggering rise in value

Rigg has been one of the standout Sunderland performers this season, scoring some crucial goals for the Black Cats to propel his side towards the play-offs.

Namely, his infamous backheel winner against Middlesbrough, which was awarded the Championship goal of the month award for September.

Premier League sides West Ham and Everton are seriously interested in Rigg, but have been deterred by Sunderland’s minimum evaluation set for the youngster.

Top flight giants Manchester United and Arsenal hold interest in Rigg as the summer transfer window looms, with the England youth star contracted at Sunderland until 2027. Italian giants such as Inter Milan also have tracked Rigg this season.

Rigg made his Sunderland debut in January 2023 against Shrewsbury, and has since gone on to become a first-team regular at only 17, breaking a host of records in the process.

Milestones for the Academy of Light graduate include becoming Sunderland’s youngest-ever goalscorer and the youngest goalscorer ever in the Carabao Cup.

Meanwhile, he has also captained his country at youth level, and recently scoring England’s match-winner to send the Young Lions into Euros qualification.

His dazzling displays have seen his transfer value rise from a reported £167k back in April 2024 (as per transfermarkt.com), to an eight-figure estimated fee of £13.4million just a year later.

An increase of 5260% perfectly illustrates the meteoric rise of Rigg and his potential to become an elite talent.

Chris Rigg’s true value to Sunderland is even higher

Sunderland fans have debated Rigg’s true value with the latest valuations reportedly touting the creative midfielder around the £40million mark.

This would constitute a similar fee which saw Archie Gray depart Leeds for Spurs last summer. Gray has proved very good value for money this campaign, and Rigg could do the same as Gray to prove that Premier League sides are right to talent spot in the second tier.

Chris Rigg’s stats so far this Championship season

Head coach Le Bris has tried to calm the storm over a summer firesale. However, persistent transfer reports surrounding the trio would suggest the Black Cats will have a fight on their hands to retain three of their most-talented youngsters this summer.

Rigg’s exponentially increasing value is a token of Sunderland’s pivotal role in his development, granting him 62 senior footballing appearances before his 18th birthday. His creative flair will be pivotal for the Black Cats’ run-in.

If the Black Cats fail to earn promotion from the Championship this term, they will be inundated with offers for the midfield starlets, some of which could be too hard to refuse.
