Midfielder’s current Sunderland contract expires as Italian top flight side register interest.
Sunderland have become recognised amongst English football as producers and nurturers of some of the country’s finest young footballing talent..
Early successes in previous regimes include the £30 million of academy graduate goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the £20million sale of Jordan Henderson to Liverpool.
Under current ownership headed by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus – accompanied by trusted sporting director Kristjaan Speakman – Sunderland have become widely recognised for their youth-first transfer policy, evidenced by having the youngest average squad age in the football league.
A plethora of Sunderland stars are being scouted by elite clubs with Trai Hume on Fulham’s radar, Jobe Bellingham wanted by Manchester United and Chris Rigg linked with West Ham, all for fees of atleast £20million.
The latest Black Cats ace linked with a move away, from his boyhood club, is one head coach Regis Le Bris will be desperate for Sunderland to keep hold of.

Sunderland captain Dan Neil reportedly wanted by Roma
Sunderland skipper Dan Neil is the latest Black Cats star being scouted by top tier clubs, with Italian giants Roma reportedly pursuing the 23-year-old.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke published on social media this week: “Roma have joined West Ham in pursuit of Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil. Neil has caught the eye of the Italian giants after they sent officials to keep track of Enzo Le Fee who is currently on loan at Sunderland from Roma.”
Neil has made the defensive-midfielder role in Le Bris’ side his own this season, starting in all but one of Sunderland’s 38 Championship fixtures so far this season, playing a pivotal role in the heart of the Black Cats midfield.
| Key statistic | Dan Neil for Sunderland so far in Championship 2024-25 season |
| Games played | 37 |
| Goals | 2 |
| Assists | 3 |
| Duels won | 177 |
| Interceptions | 42 |
| Recoveries | 221 |
| Yellow cards | 1 |
| Red cards | 1 |
Interest from an elite European outfit such as Roma is on the one hand flattering for Sunderland, and Neil himself, as recognition for his stellar season. However, Neil’s current Sunderland contract situation remains agonisingly up in the air and the Black Cats hierarchy must act.
Sunderland must tie down Dan Neil to an extended contract
Neil’s current Sunderland deal expires in the summer of 2026, with no indication yet the 187-game Black Cats ace is set to sign an extension, it seeps doubt amongst the supporters as to whether the club will lose Neil this summer.
Le Bris has recently admitted to the Northern Echo that: “I don’t know what is happening with his (Neil’s) contract at the minute. I know that the club, with Kristjaan (Speakman) especially, has many conversations with his agent. He is a very important player for us. He is the captain… he is very impressive.”

Given Neil’s importance to Sunderland as Le Bris has made clear, the Black Cats hierarchy must act swiftly in negotiating an extension of the academy graduate’s current contract, or risk losing one of the most-gifted defensive midfielders in the Championship for a fraction of his true value this summer.
