Tommy Watson’s sale to Brighton is brilliant business by Sunderland, Kristjaan Speakman deserves praise

After months of transfer speculation over Tommy Watson, Sunderland have secured an eight-figure fee for the young winger from Premier League side Brighton.

Following the January window, it seemed inevitable that Tommy Watson was going to leave Sunderland this summer. On Tuesday, it was indeed revealed that the Academy of Light graduate will join Brighton at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Watson’s move to Brighton failed in January after the Seagulls tabled multiple bids for the 18-year-old winger.

With the Black Cats standing firm in January to keep Watson at his boyhood club, and the eight-figure fee involved with the youngster’s sale, the Sunderland hierarchy have shown their astute footballing acumen in multiple areas of the deal.

Tommy Watson’s Brighton transfer is a great deal for Sunderland

Watson will join Brighton for £10million this summer, after strong speculation in January that Watson wanted to leave his boyhood club.

Brighton were in talks to sign Watson on deadline day, but the Black Cats were reluctant to sanction the sale amid their battle for Premier League promotion.

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman stood firm and turned down a final £13million package for the young winger.

The latest bid was just shy of that £13m package deal, but with the deal being agreed outside of the window, it crucially means Watson remains a Sunderland player until this Championship campaign curtails.

With injury blows to Romaine Mundle hampering the left-winger’s season, it opened the door for Watson to make the step up from academy football to first-team action.

The youngster has made 14 senior appearances this term, starting seven Championship games and scored a game-winning brace against Stoke.

Banking a £10million fee for a raw talent, who has only featured in 14 first-team games with two goals to his name and that isn’t one of Regis Le Bris’ regular starters, is unequivocally stellar business from Sunderland.

Kristjaan Speakman’s comments were also telling

Sporting director Speakman made some telling comments to the club’s media following the sale of Watson that also underline another reason why Sunderland have played a blinder in the Watson sale.

He told SAFC.com: “Tommy’s a very talented young player, who’s been subject to multiple offers from Premier League Clubs over the past two windows, and it’s been well-documented that we’ve declined these approaches with the intent of extending his contract. Unfortunately, this has not been possible.”

Watson’s Sunderland deal was set to expire in the summer of 2026. With the young winger unwilling to sign extended terms with Sunderland amid the Premier League interest in his services, the Black Cats had no choice but to accept Brighton’s offer and Watson’s wishes.

In the process, they’ve secured an eight-figure profit on an inexperienced, unproven and raw squad player. One who also evidently didn’t want to remain at the club as his contract’s end approached according to Speakman’s telling comments.

With Le Bris now too able to call on Watson for the crucial Championship run-in, it’s hard to argue that the youngster’s sale to Brighton is anything other than stellar business from Speakman and Sunderland.
