Sunderland and Newcastle United aren’t the best of friends. But a former Magpies man has been mentioned alongside a potential move to Wearside on deadline day.
Sunderland and Newcastle United’s rivalry is as fierce as it gets, and the two have been involved in a few transfer stories over the last few months and even days.
Going into deadline day, it was revealed that Sunderland and Newcastle want to sign Matthew Orr from Linfield, as the Black Cats look to unearth their next Trai Hume.
Now though, it’s Adam Armstrong who’s in headlines.

Sunderland mentioned alongside Southampton striker Adam Armstrong
Armstrong, 27, began his career with hometown team Newcastle United, but made his name with Blackburn Rovers between 2018 and 2021 where he scored an impressive 64 goals in 160 total games for the club.
He moved to Southampton in 2021 but he’s had mixed fortunes since. A report from The Telegraph (09:32, February 3rd 2025) has now revealed that Armstrong has deadline day interest, namechecking Middlesbrough and Sunderland as interested parties.
But the same report goes on to add that a return to the north-east for Armstrong is currently unlikely.

Sunderland’s Adam Armstrong links debunked
Sunderland are set to sign Jayden Danns on loan from Liverpool for the remainder of the season. And he’s apparently the only striker being considered.
An emerging claim from Sunderland Echo says that Armstrong ‘not being considered’ right now, and that the club is still working on a deal for Danns who’s arriving for his medical on Monday.
Armstrong remains a proven striker at Championship level though and a move to Sunderland would make sense on paper, although given the Newcastle connection, it might not go down so well with fans.
