Not for the first time in this January transfer window, Sunderland have been told they won’t be signing one of their rumoured transfer targets.

The list of players linked with Sunderland has doubled, even tripled in the last week or so. It’s clear that Kristjaan Speakman is rushing for a new signing behind the scenes.

So far, Sunderland have signed two players in Enzo Le Fee and Wilson Isidor though Regis Le Bris wants another striker signing at Sunderland before the window shuts.

A handful of strikers have been linked of late. One who was linked earlier in the window was Westerlo’s Matija Frigan, and at one point he seemed very close to a move to Wearside.

Westerlo make final decision on Sunderland target Matija Frigan

Earlier in January, reports emerged claiming that Sunderland made a loan-to-buy offer for Frigan, 21, who’s scored six goals in 22 Belgian Pro League games for Westerlo so far in 2024/25.

The Black Cats would’ve had to pay a handsome £10million to make the deal permanent, should they earn promotion this season. But an emerging claim from Belgian outlet Voetbal Nieuws now reports that Frigan won’t be leaving Westerlo for any team this month.

They’ve just loaned out two first-team players and now they’re shutting the door on anymore player exits in this winter window.

Sunderland turn attentions to Liverpool youngster

In Sunderland’s frantic race for a striker, there’s a new name being quite strongly linked with a move to Wearside: Jayden Danns.

Sunderland are keen on Danns at Liverpool, but so too are Blackburn Rovers who have a plan to beat Sunderland in this transfer race.

As for Frigan, his links to the Stadium of Light went pretty cold pretty quickly, so it’s no surprise to now hear that a move to Sunderland in the final hours of the winter window is not going to happen.
