The transfer window is well underway. We’re seeing several names linked with moves to the Stadium of Light, with one signing through the door in Enzo Le Fee. Now, there’s another European name for fans to get excited about.

Sunderland have completed their first January signing of 2025, bringing in Enzo Le Fee on loan from Roma in a move that’s surprised Championship viewers. The Black Cats are thought to be paying Le Fee’s wages for the next six months, up to £69,000-a-week.

Next up, Kristjaan Speakman looks like he’s going to target a new striker. Sunderland are linked with Tom Cannon who the Black Cats have fancied for a while now, but Leicester City want £7million for Cannon and so how likely a deal is remains to be seen.

Ben Brereton Diaz has also been mentioned, albeit not as much as Cannon. Now, there’s a new striker apparently on the Black Cats’ radar for this January transfer window.

Sunderland looking at Westerlo striker Matija Frigan

Reliable journalist Michael Graham has revealed on X that Sunderland are looking at Westerlo’s Croatian U21 striker Matija Frigan. Graham says that the Black Cats are ‘taking a serious look’ at the 21-year-old right now.

Frigan has been with Belgian Pro League side Westerlo for the last season-and-a-half. He scored five in 30 league games last season but already has six in 20 this time round, with seven goals to his name in all competitions for the Belgian top flight side.

The striker, who stands at 6ft tall, is under contract at Westerlo until the summer of 2028.

Why a new striker now looks like an urgent priority for Sunderland

Sunderland could now face a bit of a race against the clock to sign a new and decent striker before deadline day, with Wilson Isidor looking like he could soon become the only no.9 at the Stadium of Light.

It’s reported that Millwall want to sign Aaron Connolly from Sunderland, following the Irishman’s poor start to life on Wearside, and also that Sunderland could send Trey Ogunsuyi out on loan for the remainder of the season.

Regis Le Bris simply cannot rely on just Isidor in the second half of the season. An injury to him would derail this promotion push and so a new striker is needed. Whether or not Frigan could bolster the promotion push though remains to be seen.
