Sunderland may have a new Chris Rigg in their midst with young striker Trey Ogunsuyi breaking through, and already attracting the attention of Liverpool in this January transfer window.
Trey Ogunsuyi finally made his senior debut for the Black Cats, coming off the bench late on in the FA Cup defeat against Stoke City last time out.
The 18-year-old Black Cats academy product has scored four goals in four Premier League 2 appearances for the Sunderland U21s this season. And he’s caught the eye, with Liverpool keen to sign Ogunsuyi in 2025.
Previously, it was revealed that Sunderland would rebuff bids for Ogunsuyi during the January transfer window, with the striker already labelled as ‘the next Chris Rigg’, being very highly-regarded by the club and by Regis Le Bris.
Ogunsuyi spoke out after his Sunderland debut over the weekend. He said: “I want to thank all the staff, the team, and everyone who has helped me get to this point. I’m going to keep pushing myself for more chances.”

Sunderland could sanction January loan exit for Liverpool target Trey Ogunsuyi
With Ogunsuyi desperate for regular game time, and at a senior level too, it’d make sense for Sunderland to loan him out. And that’s exactly what Sunderland Echo are now reporting with the striker a ‘potential candidate for a January loan’.
Their report states that Sunderland could sanction several loan or even permanent exits after that Stoke City game, with the team selection showing who is and who isn’t in Le Bris’ first-team plans right now.
There’s no mention of possible loan interest in Ogunsuyi, nor where he could end up. But it’d be safe to assume that there’s at least be a handful of clubs lower down the Football League or in the non-league ready to take a punt on Ogunsuyi.

Regis Le Bris comments on Sunderland departures
Speaking to Sunderland Echo after the Stoke game, Le Bris himself suggested that player exits will happen at the Stadium of Light in January, but more towards the end of the transfer window.
The Frenchman said: “At the end of this window we have to find the right balance between the team and the depth of the squad for the games but for the training sessions as well.
“They are very useful for that and they are very connected. But we have to think about their own pathway as well. That’s important.”
Now with Aaron Connolly potentially joining Millwall, it could mean Ogunsuyi is kept around, or it could mean that Sunderland sign another striker so that Ogunsuyi can go out on loan.
The Black Cats are next in action against Burnley on Friday.
