One Sunderland man went under the radar with an incredible performance against Hull City.
Sunderland managed to pick up yet another three points at the weekend, this time seeing off Hull City at the MKM Stadium in a 1-0 victory.
There were many top performers across Regis Le Bris’ side, with Wilson Isidor notably bagging the goal after showing electric pace to get past Hull City full-back Cody Drameh. The goal didn’t go without controversy after the referee allegedly intervened with play, which has stirred up debate as a result.
Aside from the controversies and the brilliant attacking play from the French forward, the Black Cats had several contenders for Player of the Match including Chris Mepham, who was solid as a rock at the back, and as a result has gained praise from Le Bris.
However, there was another player that went under the radar for Sunderland after a brilliant showing vs Hull City, and it was a performance that he has been able to deliver on a consistent basis this season.

Luke O’Nien delivers another top performance for Sunderland
Sunderland defender Luke O’Nien’s captaincy was taken away from him at the start of the 2024/25 Championship season, with Dan Neil taking on the responsibility, and whilst this would often disrupt some players, that certainly isn’t the case with the English defender.
The Sunderland centre-back has been able to consistently provide top performances time-and-time again so far in the 2024/25 Championship campaign, and the game against Hull City saw that trend continue, as he was rightfully described as ‘remarkable’ via Michael Graham on X.
Per SofaScore, O’Nien put more than an assured defensive display on against Hull as he managed five clearances, as well as three tackles and five ground duels won out of seven.
The former team captain was also integral when it came to playmaking at the weekend with him recording a spectacular 89 touches, whilst also successfully placing 68 out of 72 attempted passes.

Luke O’Nien is massive underappreciated at Sunderland
Mepham and Isidor most certainly deserved the plaudits following yesterday’s win, as did Neil, who was able to perform despite the pressure of hoping to improve on recent performances. However, O’Nien certainly should have been handed more praise than he was given.
To put it simply, he has been nothing short of immense up until this point and he without a doubt has been underappreciated, as Sunderland simply wouldn’t be in the same position they are in now, not just at the top of the Championship but simply in the second-tier at all.
Despite handing over the captaincy, he still acts as a leader on the pitch and in the dressing room, and any success that comes the way of Sunderland, it should be known that a lot of that comes down to O’Nien, a brilliant stalwart for Le Bris’ side.
