Sunderland have their sixth summer signing lined up.

So far this summer, Sunderland have signed five new players, with Wilson Isidor being the last.

Now with deadline day upon us, Sunderland and Kristjaan Speakman look eager to do some final bits of business, with several names linked.

And so far it’s all been strikers linked to the Stadium of Light, with Sunderland mentioned alongside all of Tom Cannon, David Datro Fofana, and Gift Orban at Lyon.

Regis Le Bris’ side are now honing in on their next summer transfer deal, but it’s not a deal for any of the names above.

Sunderland agree loan deal for Bournemouth centre-back Chris Mepham

Sunderland are now poised to sign Bournemouth centre-back Chris Mepham on loan for the 2024/25 season.

Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam has revealed the news, with 26-year-old Mepham now on his way to Wearside to undergo a medical with the club.

Mepham has 121 total appearances for the Cherries and 36 caps for Wales, having helped Bournemouth win promotion to the Premier League in 2022.

Sunderland do not have an option or obligation to buy Mepham.

A solid addition for Sunderland on deadline day

Whilst all the focus has been on a striker, Sunderland have acted quickly to bring in a centre-back, following the injury to Aji Alese.

Dan Ballard also remains sidelined and so Mepham seems like a very shrewd addition, and Speakman must be praised for getting this one over the line so soon, and on deadline day.

Mepham will be eager to play some regular football having played an increasingly bit part role with Bournemouth in the Premier League.

He’ll be hoping that his Premier League experience shines through and that he can use his promotion experience to help get the Black Cats over the line this season.

Sunderland travel to Portsmouth on Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.
