One Sunderland youngster has received a nomination for an award for his incredible spells recently.
Sunderland’s academy has continued to thrive throughout the 2024/25 Championship season.
Ever since Regis Le Bris took over the reigns on Wearside, the Frenchman has been able to get the very best out of midfield star Chris Rigg at such a young age, whilst team captain Dan Neil has continued to show such class to adapt to his defensive-midfield role.
Even the likes of Tommy Watson have stepped up brilliantly due to a lack of depth in the final third, and Le Bris even has the likes of Harrison Jones and Trey Ogunsuyi yet to deploy, with both tipped for big things at Sunderland.
However, one player that certainly is coming on leaps-and-bounds is in fact currently thriving away from the Stadium of Light, and that is Matty Young.
The 18-year-old currently finds himself on loan at League Two outfit Salford City, and his recent spells have seen him pick up a well-deserved nomination for an award that truly reflects on just how good he has been in recent games.

Recent weeks have seen Sunderland fans become quite accustomed to the fact that they have 18-year-old Young currently making his name known in League Two with Salford City, having notched seven clean sheets in as little as eight league games ever since he was brought into Karl Robinson’s side.
Following his ‘amazing’ performances that have more than helped Salford City to six consecutive wins, leaving them 3rd in League Two, he has rightfully been nominated as the PFA League Two fans’ Player of the Month for December.
Young, who has reportedly attracted interest from Premier League giants Manchester City, initially found it difficult to cement his spot in the Salford City starting side in the league, but his consistency recently has certainly confirmed his title as one of Sunderland’s top prospects.

With the reported interest from Manchester City in one of Sunderland’s most in-form youngsters, there needs to be some persuasion on the Black Cats’ end to ensure that he sees his long-term future on Wearside, and his recent performances are surely enough for him to command a part of the squad in the near future.
There is, of course, plenty of uncertainty over Anthony Patterson’s future, with him being linked to Premier League moves previously, and as a result, it could be made clear that Young could be Sunderland’s next No1.
The Sunderland loanee, whilst only being 18-years-old, has shown plenty of maturity, from patiently waiting for his opportunity at the start of the season, to putting on such consistent showings at what is a high level.
Without putting too much pressure on the youngster, he is very much in-line to be a key part of the Sunderland side in future, and that must certainly be communicated with him in order to ensure that Premier League interest doesn’t lure him away from the Stadium of Light.
