Sunderland star breaks silence on his future amid Premier League links as ‘ridiculous offer’ mooted

There are a handful of Sunderland players attracting the interest of Premier League clubs. But with the Black Cats battling for promotion, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus looks set to knock back most attempts at his players.

Sunderland though are very much a selling club. As are most in the Championship which is what they need to be if they’re to keep on competing financially with those who come down from the Premier League each season.

Having been out of the top flight for nearly eight years now, the Black Cats need to get in whatever cash they can. Last summer, Sunderland sold Jack Clarke for £20million in a smart bit of business, with more sales expected in 2025.

Right now, Jobe Bellingham is attracting a lot of interest with the likes of Arsenal and Crystal Palace being strongly linked. Recently though, young goalkeeper Matty Young has been linked with a shock Premier League move.

The Black Cats academy man is impressing on loan at Salford City this season, where the 18-year-old has kept eight clean sheets in 14 total appearances.

Matty Young discusses his Sunderland future

It’s been revealed that Manchester City are keeping tabs on Young. But the youngster remains under contract at the Stadium of Light until 2028 and so Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and co are under no pressure to sell.

And the Sunderland owner, along with Regis Le Bris and everyone else involved will be pleased to hear that Young has ambitions to stay with the club and one day become the no.1 goalkeeper.

Speaking to the club, Young said: “I have been with the club for over a decade. I have supported Sunderland AFC my whole life. The place means the world to me, as a player and as a supporter.

“I want to play for this club in the future, that is the goal for me. I am working my way up to hopefully get my opportunity. I am really pleased with the progress I am making so far.”

Manchester City need ‘ridiculous offer’ to sign Matty Young

Right now, Anthony Patterson is the no.1 at Sunderland. But it’s no secret that he too has Premier League interest with Manchester United linked with Patterson earlier in the 2024/25 season.

Young may well be the natural heir to Patterson at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland then seem unlikely to sell, and that’s the view that pundit Carlton Palmer shares.

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer says that City would need to submit a ‘ridiculous offer’ to sign Young from the Black Cats.

He said: “I very much doubt that Sunderland will sell him unless, of course, Man City come up with a ridiculous offer.

“We know how they work and Sunderland would then reinvest that money somewhere else. But, as I say, it would have to be a ridiculous offer to sell.”

Young’s Salford City actually play Manchester City in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.
