Sunderland must now consider £1.5m Anthony Patterson replacement who Alex Neil wanted to sign

Sunderland should keep an eye on this £1.5million replacement for Anthony Patterson, amid the goalkeeper’s transfer links to the Premier League.

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson is one of several Black Cats players attracting Premier League interest this summer.

Since making his league debut for Sunderland during the 2021/22 League One season, Patterson has since gone on to make 123 first-team appearances, with 37 clean sheets to his name.

In the past 12 months, the Englishman has had links to the Premier League; Liverpool are admirers of Patterson, though more recently, it’s been reported that Wolves are considering a bid for Patterson.

So far this summer, Sunderland’s goalkeeping department has undergone a bit of a change, with Simon Moore having arrived, and Blondy Nna Noukeu set to sign after his trial period.

Youngster Matty Young has joined Salford City in League Two on a season-long loan.

With Patterson in demand, Sunderland and sporting director Kristjaan Speakman should consider possible replacements.

Sunderland should consider Daniel Iversen swoop after £1.5million reveal

One goalkeeper who looks set to be on the move this summer is Leicester City man Daniel Iversen.

The Foxes value Iversen at £1.5million, with Derby County trying but so far failing to sign the 27-year-old Danish shot-stopper this summer.

Iversen has been on Sunderland’s radar in the past; reports in 2022 claimed that Alex Neil wanted to bring Iversen to the Stadium of Light, having worked with him at Preston beforehand.

Iversen was again linked with Sunderland in 2023 when Leicester City were reportedly considering a move for Patterson, which involved sending Iversen the other way.

Why Sunderland should snap up Daniel Iversen this summer

If Patterson leaves then he’ll certainly need replacing, with Moore no doubt brought in as a no.2 and having also been injured during this pre-season.

If Noukeu joins, he’ll join as third-choice, with the 22-year-old lacking the experience to realistically play as a no.2 in the Championship.

Sunderland’s transfer business this summer suggests that Speakman is keen to bolster the Sunderland squad with Championship experience, and Iversen would bring just that.

He has 29 clean sheets in 87 total Championship appearances, winning Preston’s Player of the Year award when on loan during the 2021/22 campaign.

Patterson meanwhile has 27 clean sheets in 91 Championship appearances.

And the Black Cats look set to spend some money this summer, with Sunderland closing in on the signing of Alexandre Mendy from Ligue 2 Caen.

Speaking to Sunderland AFC News earlier in the summer, football finance expert Adam Williams revealed that Sunderland could spend close to £20million this summer, and still fall within financial regulations.

And should Patterson leave this summer, likely for a fee close to £20million, then spending £1.5million on a goalkeeper in Iversen who is statistically as good as Patterson at Championship level, if not better, seems like shrewd business.
