Forget Dennis Cirkin, another Sunderland star stole the show for Regis Le Bris vs Coventry City

A key Sunderland man was once again on his top game in the 2-2 draw against Coventry City.

Sunderland were somewhat masters of their own downfall as they threw away a 2-0 lead at the Stadium of Light to a managerless Coventry City.

The Black Cats went ahead courtesy of a lovely goal by Wilson Isidor to chip it over the Coventry shot-stopper, and that was topped by a true wonderstrike by Dennis Cirkin, who struck it sweetly from 30-yards-out.

Whilst issues did arise on the defensive front for Regis Le Bris’ side, who drew their third successive Championship game, there was one attacker who wasn’t involved in the goals who put in a stellar showing, and it is one that Sunderland fans have got more than comfortable watching since the start of the 2024/25 season.

Sunderland star Romaine Mundle proves his worth after Coventry City showing

One significant difference between the current campaign and the 2023/24 season is how much threat that Sunderland carry in either flank, and Patrick Roberts has certainly helped provide that down the right, but not much can quite top Romaine Mundle’s impact up until this point.

The French winger has done impeccably well in filling the boots of the departed Jack Clarke, and he has creatively been immense.

He was without a doubt ‘at the heart’ of the attacking showing from Le Bris’ side, per Sunderland Echo, and the stats clearly back that up.

Per SofaScore, Mundle managed to notch both assists in the game, as well as making three key passes. He also managed 37 touches and a solid 90% accurate pass rate.

Romaine Mundle will be missed after potential injury blow vs Coventry City

Mundle played a crucial role for Sunderland against Coventry City, as he has done on several occasions, however many Black Cats fans will be concerned by the way he exited the field on the 76th minute with an injury.

Whilst the severity of his knock is still unknown, any time out of action will be a huge blow for Le Bris, who hasn’t got limitless options to slot in for the Frenchman.

It is much more uncertain whether Sunderland will be able to maintain their levels of brilliance in their front three without Mundle, as the Coventry game certainly showed that he consistently provides the majority of output from the front.

Aaron Connolly is an option from off-the-bench, however recent showings have shown him to not be quite at the level of the French winger, and that will become evident if he has to spend time on the sidelines.
