Romaine Mundle strike nominated for goal of the month award

Romaine Mundle was introduced for Tommy Watson on the hour-mark with Sunderland 1-0 down at home to Preston North End and the left-winger certainly made an impact.

Minutes after Mundle was brought on, former Sunderland target Emil Riis Jakobsen opened the scoring for the visiting side with Sunderland failing to threaten their goal.

However, substitute Mundle came to Le Bris’ rescue with minutes to go, scoring a stunning long-range shot that curled beautifully past former Newcastle keeper Freddie Woodman’s net to spare Sunderland’s blushes.

An EFL statement said of the goal: “Some shots cannot be saved. Mundle took one touch to his right before tracing a perfect arc with his 25-yard angled shot which curled and dipped in perfect harmony to find the top corner.”

Sunderland were poor in the 1-1 draw against Preston, but Mundle’s screamer was the saving grace, and as such has been nominated for the Championship’s goal of the month award for March.

Mundle has been the difference-maker on many occasions for Sunderland this season, but his wonder goal against Preston could unfortunately be his last this season.

Sunderland ace Romaine Mundle’s injury latest

The former Spurs youngster has been in impressive form this season, scoring five goals in 17 starts, and courting the transfer attention of West Ham in the process.

Unfortunately for the dangerous wideman, Mundle’s season has been blighted by the injury he suffered against Coventry in November, of which reared it’s ugly head against with Mundle suffering a reoccurence of the knock at West Brom.

Last week in his press conference when asked about Mundle’s injury extent, the Sunderland head coach confirmed the worst. Le Bris said: “It’s a re-injury to his hamstring. We don’t know the timeframe yet. We need more information from the specialists.”

When asked if he was concerned that it might be the end of Mundle’s season, Le Bris added: “Yes, it’s possible, so we’ll have to make a decision about the situation. It’s not up to us really because need specific advice to make this decision.”

Given that Mundle missed 14 weeks of football following his initial hamstring injury against Coventry, the left-winger may miss the rest of the season – and Sunderland’s inevitable play-off campaign – which bodes a selection headache for Le Bris to solve.
