We are now heading into the latter stages of the January transfer window, and Sunderland fans will be hoping another new player comes through the door soon.
With Sunderland still firmly in the Championship title race, it’s important for Regis Le Bris to get the backing he needs to get them over the line this season.
The Black Cats made a big move early in the window by signing Enzo Le Fee on loan, but now, the priority is to sign a new striker.
And yet, despite numerous names being linked with a move to Wearside, it seems Sunderland are no closer to adding to their squad.

Regis Le Bris says Sunderland are not close to a new signing right now
Sunderland look to have missed out on Tom Cannon to Sheffield United, while speculation linking Matija Frigan with a move to the club has come to nothing thus far.
When asked about the business the Mackems could do in this transfer window, Le Bris told the Sunderland Echo that no particular deal is close to being completed, and that they are still searching for the right player.
“There is nothing [close at the moment]. We’re focused on the next game so there’s nothing to say right now. The market is open with a lot of speculation and rumours. There is a lot of work behind the scenes but it is difficult to comment on speculation.
“At the moment we want to reinforce that [striker] position, it’s clear, but we have to find the right profile. It’s still a question of connection. We can be interested by one profile but on the other side the player has to be connected with us. It’s still a meeting and so far it’s not done.”

Getting the right player is more important than making a quick signing
While we wait patiently for a confirmed Sunderland transfer, it’s important to remember that the club is in a very strong position, and has a very strong squad.
It would be foolish to rush into any move right now, especially in the attacking areas. Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda are brilliant options and are the obvious candidates to start any of the upcoming games, so Sunderland merely need to find a suitable player to cover and compete with them.
Ultimately, whether that player signs today or in a week’s time, it will not make much difference to Sunderland’s immediate fate, and they would be better-served taking their time to ensure it is the right player for their needs.
