Sunderland could miss out on January transfer target as local rivals Middlesbrough enter the race

The January transfer window is heating up, but now, Sunderland may end up missing out on one of their targets as Middlesbrough have decided to make a move.

Despite only signing one player this month, you’d have to say Sunderland have had a successful transfer window, largely thanks to the acquisition of Enzo Le Fee.

We believe Sunderland’s next transfer priority is to now find an attacker to add to Regis Le Bris’ squad before the month is out.

However, if Sunderland were keen to sign Glen Kamara, they may be disappointed to learn that local rivals Middlesbrough have now targeted the former Leeds ace.

Middlesbrough want to sign Glen Kamara

The latest on the Frenchman comes from L’Equipe, who claim Middlesbrough have made their interest known when it comes to Kamara, though they may find it difficult to finance a deal.

Middlesbrough join the likes of Trabzonspor and Premier League sides Ipswich Town and Southampton in monitoring the situation of the midfielder. Sunderland were previously linked with Kamara earlier in the month, though the arrival of Le Fee could have potentially ended that interest.

Kamara only left Leeds United last summer, but has endured a difficult time in his homeland with Stade Rennais.

Whether he returns to the Championship this month or not remains to be seen, but he could well find himself moving to the North East of England if he does.

Sunderland have other targets to focus on this month

To be fair, Sunderland are not necessarily desperate for more midfielders now, even someone as versatile as Kamara.

With links to Tom Cannon and Matija Frigan, it would seem Le Bris is keen on adding to his strikeforce. The only problem is, Sheffield United appear to have won the race for Cannon, and Frigan could cost upwards of £12m.

Sunderland definitely need cover and competition for Wilson Isidor, and we’re sure Kristjaan Speakman will come up trumps and deliver what Le Bris is asking for.

However, with injuries in the squad, surely Sunderland are in need of a new defender, too, even if it’s just temporarily to cover for absences. Either way, it’s set to be a busy end to the transfer window for the Black Cats.
