Every January, there seems to be a transfer story that grips Sunderland fans. This January, there’s been two: Enzo Le Fee and Tom Cannon. Now, we look to have a final answer on Cannon to the Stadium of Light.

Tom Cannon is a striker that Kristjaan Speakman has wanted at Sunderland for a long time. In the last three transfer windows now, the Black Cats have made a move for the Leicester City man.

He recently returned to Leicester after a prolific loan spell with Stoke City in the first half of the 2024/25 season, scoring nine in 22 Championship outings. Since, Sheffield United and Sunderland have been linked with Cannon, who could break the bank for both sides.

It’s been claimed that both clubs could pay £13million to sign Cannon during this January transfer window, in a bid to beat the other side to the signing which could prove influential in the Championship title race.

But it looks like Sunderland have been beaten in the race to sign the 22-year-old.

Sheffield United set to win race to sign Tom Cannon

Posting on X, journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that it’s Sheffield United who now look set to win the race to sign Cannon. Jacobs says that a deal should be finalised on Tuesday (21st January) for a fee in the region of £10million.

Sunderland’s only signing of the January transfer window looks set to remain Le Fee for the time being, although it’s clear that the Black Cats have made a big effort to sign Cannon. It’s also clear that the club fancies another striker signing.

Matija Frigan is linked with Sunderland who now have just Wilson Isidor up top, after Aaron Connolly joined Alex Neil at Millwall.

Sunderland reportedly agree deal for Matija Frigan

This latest Cannon news may not be so suspiring for Black Cats supporters, given recent reports that Sunderland have agreed a deal for Frigan at Westerlo in Belgium.

It’s recently been claimed that the Black Cats have agreed a loan-to-buy deal for Frigan which could end up costing the club north of £12million.

It’s thought that there’ll be movement on this front before Sunderland’s game against Derby County on Tuesday night, though we’re still waiting to see a further development.

Cannon’s reported move to Sheffield United could also prompt news about Frigan to Sunderland, who’ve quickly turned their attentions to the Croatian striker.

Kick off against Derby County is at 7:45pm on Tuesday night.
