Manager breaks silence on Sunderland target after rumours of big money transfer

Sunderland could be in store for an expensive summer transfer window, if they get promoted from the Championship this season.

Sunderland are in 4th place of the Championship table right now, despite what was a disappointing 2-2 against bottom club Plymouth Argyle in their last outing.

Promotion is very much on the cards for Regis Le Bris’ side this year and if they return to the Premier League, then Kyril Louis-Dreyfus will break the club’s transfer record.

Sunderland will have to pay £20million for Enzo Le Fee if they earn promotion this season, as part of the loan deal that saw him arrive from Roma earlier in the transfer window.

And the spending might not stop there. Sunderland would inevitably need to bolster for a return to the top flight, following what is now an eight-year hiatus, and it may be with more similar deals to this Le Fee one.

Cameron Archer is linked with Sunderland who are reportedly ready to send a loan-to-buy offer for the Southampton star, which could be worth up to £15million.

Southampton manager breaks silence on Cameron Archer rumours

Archer burst into headlines on Thursday afternoon. It was first revealed that Leeds United had seen an opening loan offer for the 23-year-old knocked back, before Sunderland were then credited with an interest as well.

Speaking to the press later that day, Southampton manager Ivan Juric was inevitably asked about the situation. But unlike most managers, Juric gave a straight answer to the speculation and the chances of Archer leaving.

He said: “I don’t think something will happen. He will stay with us and we will work with him.”

The Saints signed Archer from Aston Villa in a £15million deal last summer. He’s since scored twice in 21 Premier League games for Southampton, who sit in last place of the table.

Transfer expert shares verdict on Cameron Archer to Sunderland

It’s another exciting link for Sunderland, and one that shows the genuine ambition of the owners to really go for promotion this season.

It certainly seems like an unlikely deal as things stand. But the Le Fee deal looked unlikely too, so there’s every hope that Sunderland sign Archer before the window slams shut no February 3rd.

Speaking to Sunderland AFC News, transfer expert Graeme Bailey gave his verdict on the link. He said: “We’re told Sunderland would be willing to do a loan with an obligation, but Leeds are in for him and that makes things difficult for Sunderland – they are tempting club for any player. Sunderland though are still trying.”

Sunderland are linked with several attackers ahead of deadline day, with a game away at Middlesbrough on the evening of deadline day too.
