Dutch giants Ajax are currently home to Wearside legend Jordan Henderson and Sunderland target Chuba Akpom. Now, they could be about to sign a different Sunderland target.
Ajax have been in several Sunderland headlines over the last few months, starting with Sunderland’s links to Jordan Henderson in 2024.
It was said that the former Black Cats academy man was set to leave Ajax and that Sunderland were keen on a sensational reunion, though that link has since gone cold.
More recently, Sunderland have been linked with Chuba Akpom at Ajax. It’s reported that the Eredivisie side are keen to get Akpom off their wage bill, and that Sunderland are interested in signing the former Middlesbrough star.
Even Ajax manager Francesco Farioli might be a recognisable name to Wearsiders – he was linked with the manager’s job when Tony Mowbray was in charge.
Now, there’s another Sunderland-Ajax story, with the two clubs vying to sign the same player before the transfer window slams shuts on February 3rd.

Ajax keen on Sunderland target Rabbi Matondo
Rabbi Matondo is poised to leave Rangers before deadline day, and Sunderland have been linked with the former Manchester City youngster. Sunderland AFC News have been told that Matondo could leave Rangers for a cut-price fee with the Gers simply keen to get him off the books.
An emerging report from Dutch outlet De Telegraaf has now revealed that Ajax have taken an interest in the 24-year-old Matondo. They write that Ajax’s scouts have been ‘particularly charmed’ by Matondo as they look to sign a new winger in the final days of the window.
The last couple of seasons have been shaky for Ajax. But they’re really stabilising under Farioli with the club sitting in 2nd place of the Eredivisie table behind PSV; trailing by four points but with a game in hand.

Rangers in Rabbi Matondo transfer talks
Recently, it was revealed that Rangers are in talks to offload Matondo before February 3rd, and that a number of Championship clubs were keen on signing the Welsh international.
But with Ajax now joining the race, it could prove to be a devastating blow for Sunderland and any other Championship club that was keen on signing the left-sided attacker.
Ajax remain a huge club in European football. And Matondo would have the chance to not only vie for an Eredivisie title but to potentially represent the club in European football, with Ajax still in the Europa League.
So for Sunderland, Ajax joining the race for Matondo will certainly be a worry.
