Sunderland have sent Adil Aouchiche on loan to Portsmouth in a move that’s certainly split opinion among Black Cats fans.
Adil Aouchiche will spend the rest of the 2024/25 season on loan with Championship strugglers Portsmouth.
The Frenchman featured just eight times in the Championship for Sunderland under his former Lorient boss Regis Le Bris, during what’s been a tough spell for the 22-year-old.
Sunderland fans think Aouchiche should’ve stayed for the remainder of the season, though many recognise that he simply wants game time which he hasn’t been getting at the Stadium of Light.
Kristjaan Speakman reveals his plans for Adil Aouchiche at Sunderland
Speaking after the club sanctioned Aouchiche’s loan move to Fratton Park, Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman revealed what his plans are for Aouchiche’s future on Wearside.
Speakman told the club that he and Aouchiche will review the situation in the summer once he’s had a chance to play some regular first-team football with Pompey.
Speakman said: “Adil has worked hard and played his part when called upon, and been a good team-mate, but competition within our squad is extremely high and his opportunities have been limited as a result.
“Naturally, he would like to play more regularly, and we believe this opportunity will enable him to do that in a competitive environment that will support his development. We wish him well and look forward to reviewing his progress at the end of the campaign.”
What does the future hold for Adil Aouchiche at Sunderland?
Aouchiche, like many others at Sunderland, is under a long-term contract. The former PSG youngster is on a deal until the summer of 2028 and so there’s every chance that he has a future with Sunderland.
Aouchiche wasn’t in the Pompey side that drew against Burnley on Saturday, but expect him to make his debut in the next outing against Sheffield United on Saturday.
Portsmouth under John Mousinho can be very dangerous in attack. They’ve scored more goals (36) than any other team in the bottom half of the Championship table, barring Watford in 12th.
In a forward-thinking side and with a run of games, we could really see the best of Aouchiche. Should he impress then it could lead to positive Sunderland talks with Speakman in the summer, and more gametime with the Black Cats in 2025/26.
