Mike Dodds has certainly been a divisive figure at Sunderland in the last year or so. But he now looks set to take his first step into management with Wycombe Wanderers.
Sunderland fans know assistant first-team coach Mike Dodds very well. He’s had three stints as interim manager including a lengthy one in the second half of last season.
But the Sunderland fans were unimpressed with Dodds. He guided the Black Cats to a miserable 16th place finish in the Championship table that season, as Sunderland only beat the drop by six points.

Wycombe Wanderers make move for Sunderland coach Mike Dodds
On Saturday evening, it was revealed that Dodds was the front-runner to become the next manager at Wycombe Wanderers, after previous boss Matt Bloomfield left for Luton Town.
Now, The Northern Echo has revealed that Dodds to Wycombe ‘should be tied up in the next few days’, as Dodds embarks on what will be his first permanent position in management.
The same report adds that, whilst Le Bris “values Dodds’ input”, he “does not want to stand in Dodds’ way”, and nor does sporting director Kristjaan Speakman.

Mike Dodds’ record with Sunderland in 2023/24
Dodds’ football with Sunderland last season was pretty turgid. Although he took over a misfiring team, it was still one that boasted a lot of quality, and to finish as miserably as they did was poor on his behalf as well as the players’ behalf.
Taking over after Sunderland sacked Michael Beale in February last year, Dodds went on to oversee 13 games in charge of the Black Cats, and he won just two of them.
Dodds suffered eight losses in those 13 games. But at a new club with different challenges and so on, Dodds could use his vast expertise in the game to really become a decent manager.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see how he fares on his own.
