Tony Mowbray has revealed Sunderland could complete a double transfer swoop in the coming weeks.

Speaking at the EFL season launch on Wednesday, the Black Cats boss claimed the club had ‘bids in’ for certain players and are hopeful that they could even sign a new striker before their Championship opener.

Sunderland have already snapped up Luis Hemir Semedo and Eliezer Mayenda to add squad depth to their attack, however an immediate injury for the latter has once again left them light up top.

With Ross Stewart potentially out until late September, Mowbray is keen to bring in more competition for Hemir and has admitted they could also sign a midfielder before transfer deadline day.

“We’re working really hard on that,” Mowbray said. “We had a meeting yesterday and we’ve got bids in for players. We’re pushing hard to make sure we have additions in that part of the pitch.

“Hemir wasn’t really bought as a number one centre forward right away, he was brought as a project to nurture and to grow and to give him some game time.

“I’m pretty sure that we will have some help for Hemir at the top end of the pitch, whether that be before the season starts or certainly before the window closes.

“I think we need another attacking player in the building, and I know we’re working hard to do that.

“Then potentially a midfield player, who can complement Dan Neil and Pierre Ekwah and Jobe Bellingham.”

How successful have Sunderland been in the summer transfer window?

Sunderland’s transfer window kicked off very strongly when they quickly added the likes of Bellingham and Hemir to their ranks.

The Black Cats have done very well to bring in hugely talented youngsters with bags of potential, though they probably need a couple more experienced individuals to balance it out.

Bradley Dack is probably an underrated signing given his immense record with Blackburn Rovers prior to his injury. The midfielder joins on a free transfer so is relatively risk free and I think he could be very similar to Alex Pritchard when he arrived.

If the club can bring in a slightly older striker who could slot straight into the team and another midfielder then I think fans will be happy.
