The Black Cats are set to miss out on yet another attacker in the January transfer window.

Unfortunately for Sunderland, their January transfer window has been summed up by their ambitions in looking to bring top-level attackers into the side, but just fallen short of the hurdle with many stars opting to go elsewhere.

Sunderland’s number of signings this January now sits at two with the recent deal to sign Wilson Isidor on a permanent deal following his prolific start to life on Wearside where he was playing on an initial loan deal, and he joins Roma loanee Enzo Le Fee as the other signing.

Kristjaan Speakman and Regis Le Bris would have hoped for extra reinforcements in the final third as we enter the closing days of the January transfer window, with previous targets Tom Cannon, Ben Brereton Diaz and Chuba Akpom all opting to move elsewhere, with the former two moving to promotion rivals Sheffield United.

After Cannon and Brereton Diaz, it looks as though another side towards the summit of the Championship is set to yet again beat Sunderland to another ambitious signing.

Sunderland set to miss out on Marcus Edwards as Burnley enter advanced talks

Once again, it looks set that Sunderland will be beaten to the signature of yet another attacker, with Sporting Lisbon attacker Marcus Edwards choosing fellow promotion candidates Burnley ahead of Sunderland, per Fabrizio Romano on X.

Talks between the Clarets and the English winger are at ‘final stages’, despite Sunderland reportedly being in the driving seat to sign Edwards only yesterday.

Romano has revealed that Edwards opted for Burnley ahead of a move to Wearside because of Scott Parker, who was at Tottenham Hotspur during Edwards’ youth career at Spurs.

Kristjaan Speakman will need to go all out for alternative attacking target

Sunderland’s luck with bringing in attackers in the January transfer window has been incredibly low, although Speakman does deserve credit for the calibre of player he is looking to bring into the side.

Quality, as opposed to bodies is rightly being prioritised by Speakman as he looks to target the areas in which Le Bris’ squad can be improved, as the closely returning Tommy Watson and Romaine Mundle will provide the necessary wide depth, whilst Eliezer Mayenda and Isidor are solid striker options.

Nonetheless, one other player that Sunderland are currently linked with is Willem Geubbels, someone that would tick the boxes of providing that quality which will rival Isidor and Mayenda, and with very little time left in the window, Speakman needs to sanction such a deal very quickly.
