Sunderland are reportedly weighing up a move for an in-demand striker before the window closes.

Sunderland are still continuing in their search to bring in a striker before the transfer window comes to a close.

Alexandre Mendy has been linked with a move to Sunderland all summer, however a deal to bring in the 2023/24 Ligue 2 top scorer continues to look less likely, despite the striker fancying a move to Wearside.

The Black Cats will be thankful that striker Eliezer Mayenda has been able to gel in the side and show his qualities at Championship level, especially after bagging a well-taken brace at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

However, an attacker is a priority still before the conclusion of the window, especially with the departure of Jack Clarke, who has joined Premier League side Ipswich Town.

A striker has been identified as an option to lead the line for Regis Le Bris’ side, however Sunderland face one issue in their pursuit for the Premier League man.

Sunderland target Leicester City forward Tom Cannon but face one issue

Leicester City striker Tom Cannon has been a player that has piqued the interest of many Championship sides this summer, especially with it seeming likely that he is not part of Foxes boss Steve Cooper’s plans.

As a result, Sunderland have reportedly identified the striker, joining the likes of Luton Town, Sheffield United and Stoke City, per Alan Nixon on Patreon.

However, one issue that Sunderland face is the fact that they will ‘need to move quickly to catch their rivals’ to the signing of Cannon.

A permanent move could set Sunderland back as much as a reported £7million, which is a fee that Luton Town are considering in a ‘surprise’ move.

Sunderland must go all in for Tom Cannon

Whilst Mendy has been the top priority for Sunderland this season, there is enough about Cannon to suggest that Kristjaan Speakman should fully alter any plans to potentially bring in the Guinea-Bissau striker and go all in for the Leicester man.

Whilst Mayenda has performed well so far this season, there is still far from a guarantee that he will be able to continue with his goal scoring prowess for the full season, and this is something that Cannon could guarantee based off his record in the Championship.

He notably bagged eight goals in just 20 games for Preston North End in the 2022/23 campaign, however he has since not been given much of an opportunity at Leicester City, where he has struggled to get game time ahead of both Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka.

Whilst a permanent move could set Sunderland quite far back, it is a move that could be necessary for Le Bris’ chances of success this season, and time is running out for a striker to be brought in this summer.
