The Black Cats have been handed a huge boost as they look to keep hold of one key player this January.

With the transfer window very much underway, Sunderland will be hoping to keep hold of as many of their key players as possible.

The Black Cats have many top prospects on the books that have already been drumming up interest from elsewhere, however, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris looks to be confident in players opting to stay on Wearside this season.

Sunderland midfield stars Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham are two of the players that been recognised by Premier League and European sides, whilst shot-stopper Anthony Patterson has also received interest.

Sunderland handed huge Anthony Patterson boost as Tottenham Hotspur opt for alternative goalkeeper

There was concrete interest from Tottenham Hotspur in Patterson going into the January transfer window, and it was a deal that could have sprung up several issues for Le Bris’ side as he would have been very difficult to replace.

However, it looks like that potential problem has been momentarily covered up as Tottenham Hotspur have instead turned their attention to Slavia Prague shot-stopper Antonin Kinsky, with the goalkeeper set to sign a long term deal, per Fabrizio Romano on X.

The Sunderland goalkeeper has started 21 games this season, conceding just 20 in the 2024/25 Championship campaign.

Regis Le Bris would need stop-gap replacement for Anthony Patterson, but long term cover is already sorted

Looking at Sunderland’s goalkeeper options, they have both Simon Moore and Blondy Nna Noukeu available to stand in if needed. There is no doubt over the pair’s ability as back up options, but extra quality would be needed to plug the gap.

Despite this, Sunderland do already have that quality waiting in the wings, and it comes in the form of youngster Matty Young, who is currently thriving whilst on loan at Salford City.

The 18-year-old may not be fully ready for first-team football at Championship level, but with seven clean sheets in eight League Two games, there is no doubting his quality at such a young age, and there is no doubt that he will likely be the No1 Sunderland shot-stopper in the future.
