Sunderland are certainly a club with ambition. They’re striving to get back to the Premier League and to do that, they need to set their sights on players who can get them there. But it seems like their interest in one player is overly-ambitious.
Going into this January transfer window, Sunderland were linked with five attacking players, suggesting that Kristjaan Speakman and manager Regis Le Bris are keen to bolster the club’s frontline.
It makes sense, too. Sunderland have at times struggled for goals in the Championship, especially when Wilson Isidor hasn’t been firing in front of goal, although the Frenchman has two in his last three now.
The striker position remains one that is very light on numbers and arguably on quality too, with free agent signing Aaron Connolly having not lived up to the hope that Sunderland fans had for him.
One striker that Sunderland are reportedly keen on is Evan Ferguson at Brighton. The Seagulls are tipped to offload him in January, either on loan or permanently.

Sunderland told there’s ‘no way’ they sign Evan Ferguson
It’s been claimed that Sunderland are keen on a loan deal for Ferguson, along with promotion contenders Leeds United, with the Irish international having struggled in front of goal this season.
He’s scored one goal in 12 Premier league appearances so far this season. And his situation has gotten a number of Premier League clubs on alert with Arsenal even linked with Ferguson during the January transfer window.
Speaking to Sunderland AFC News, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has insisted that Ferguson won’t be dropping down to the Championship to join Sunderland on loan.
He said: “There is no way that Evan Ferguson would drop down a division, in theory it might suit Brighton to send him to a non-rival, but Ferguson believes he is one of Europe’s top young strikers. He won’t be coming to the Championship.”

Where will Evan Ferguson go in January?
There’s a lot of talk about where Ferguson might go to now. Brighton though are still weighing up whether or not to offload him in January, be that permanently or temporarily.
Recent reports have revealed that West Ham are very keen on the 20-year-old, whilst Arsenal seemingly retain an interest in what would be a shock move for the forward.
For Sunderland then, they must quickly move on from their interest in Ferguson. But their interest certainly shows the ambition that the club has for this January transfer window.
The Black Cats return to Championship action with a home game against strugglers Portsmouth on Sunday, with kick off at 3pm.
