Sunderland look set to return to the Tom Cannon bidding war after initially leaving the race.

With Deadline Day well underway, Sunderland are still in the hunt to sign a striker.

Wilson Isidor signed for the Black Cats recently, with the ability to play either up front or on the left, and Regis Le Bris also has an on-form Eliezer Mayenda at the helm this campaign, however the French manager is still keen for his attacking options to be further bolstered.

Kristjaan Speakman has been pursuing a striker deal for the summer, with a move for Alexandre Mendy taking priority, and only recently Leicester City striker Tom Cannon has been a target for Sunderland after a deal for Mendy appeared to stagnate.

Despite leaving the race due to an £8million price-tag given to Cannon, Black Cats have been issued fresh hope regarding the pursuit of the Englishman.

Sunderland target Tom Cannon wants loan move away from Leicester City

After initially being priced out of a deal for the Leicester City striker, Sunderland could return with a move for the attacker after it was reported that Cannon ‘wants to go on loan’, per Alan Nixon on Patreon.

Sunderland have been fighting with fellow Championship clubs Luton Town, Hull City and Middlesbrough to sign the striker in a permanent move.

With the deal looking to be a loan move, it would see the striker ‘choose where he wants to play’, with his priorities supposedly being ‘game time’ and the ‘prospect of promotion’.

Sunderland have upper-hand in Tom Cannon pursuit

When looking at Cannon’s list of demands when looking to move on loan to a Championship side, it is clear that he is looking for a club with ambition, and one that will surely be in the higher echelons of the table this season.

Sunderland have already proven just three games in that they are a much-improved side in the 2024/25 campaign and will likely be alongside the other teams targeting Cannon in the table.

However, something that Sunderland can absolutely guarantee to the striker is game time at this stage, especially with the lacking attacking options at the club, and with this in mind, there will be no surprises to see Cannon choose a move to Wearside if Speakman returns to the bidding table with a loan offer.
