Regis Le Bris won’t sell ‘sensational’ Sunderland player on Deadline Day amid transfer interest

Sunderland have already lost one key player in Jack Clarke, but will be eager to keep hold of their prized assets on Deadline Day.

Sunderland battled interest in a long list of their senior players earlier in the summer and were expected to be in for a difficult couple of months.

While Clarke joined Ipswich Town last week, fans were left relieved when Jobe Bellingham, Dan Ballard and Chris Rigg all committed to new contracts.

Trai Hume was previously the subject of a £7 million bid from Galatasaray, but talks of an exit have very quickly died down.

The Black Cats only real concern this week has been the future of Patrick Roberts, with recent reports claiming Luton Town were considering a swoop to replace Chiedoze Ogbene.

The winger has had a ‘sensational’ start to the season and looks to have established himself as one of the first names on the team-sheet under Regis Le Bris.

Sunderland make decision on Patrick Roberts

Roberts only signed a new deal last year, but Luton were keen to bring him down south in their bid to return to the Premier League.

It looks to be good news for Sunderland though, with journalist James Copley claiming he isn’t going anywhere.

Copley wrote on X: “Understand Patrick Roberts will not leave Sunderland on deadline day as things stand. Had been clubs interested in his services.”

Given Roberts’ contract situation, the club would have been able to demand a high fee for his exit.

However, they have absolutely no reason to sell, and with Clarke already leaving, it seems very important that they keep hold of the 27-year-old.

The winger could be pivotal for Sunderland this season

Roberts already declared his love for the club after featuring in his 100th appearance last time out, so it would have been a huge surprise if he had chosen to leave.

The Black Cats currently sit top of the Championship after three wins from three, while Luton have only picked up one point.

Roberts is still on the hunt for his first goal since April 2023, but it’s clear that he has made a huge impact elsewhere so far this term.

The attacker will face competition from Ian Poveda now that he’s fully fit, but the Colombian will have a big hill to climb if he is to force his way into the starting line-up.
