Good news for Sunderland as rivals pull out of race to sign Black Cats deadline day target

The next 12 hours or so will likely be hectic on the Sunderland transfer front, despite the Black Cats playing against Middlesbrough in the evening.

Regis Le Bris says the Middlesbrough match isn’t ideal timing for Sunderland who still have matters to attend to in the transfer market.

The Black Cats are searching for a new attacking signing but they don’t appear to be close to any signings in particular.

As ever, though, deadline day will spring up some new links for Sunderland and Kristjaan Speakman, who may have to be reactive in the market and see what comes up later on.

Leeds United not interested in Sunderland target Eduard Spertsyan

On Sunday, it was revealed that Sunderland and Leeds United were interested in Eduard Spertsyan. The Krasnodar midfielder is enjoying another prolific season with six goals and three assists in 18 Russian Premier League games so far.

And the Black Cats may have been handed a timely boost in the race to sign the 24-year-old after it’s been revealed by Russian outlet Match TV that Leeds are not pursuing a deal for Spertsyan.

According to them, Leeds United sources say the club’s reported interest in the 32-cap Armenian international is ‘not true’.

Eduard Spertsyan told to avoid Championship move

Already though, Spertsyan has been told to avoid a move to England. Former Russian footballer and now pundit Dmitri Radchenko told Russian media: “He deserves more than a transfer to a team from the second division of England.”

With Sunderland looking more for a wide player or a no.9, instead of a no.10 like Spertsyan, it could be a move that Sunderland revisit in the summer.

Right now the priority is clear: Sunderland need a new player who can add to the frontline, which currently only consists of Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda.
