It has been a chaotic transfer deadline day for Sunderland, with players rumoured to be coming in and out of the North East club.

We started the day with a number of potential Sunderland deals in mind, and as the 11pm deadline gets ever closer, plenty more names have been linked with the Mackems.

While Sunderland are looking at signing Kasey McAteer from Leicester City, and Tommy Watson pursues a move to Brighton, the Black Cats have just quietly arranged one loan exit for a player you probably forgot existed.

The latest name to add to the list of confirmed Sunderland transfers this month is Nathan Bishop, who’s just secured a promising loan move for the rest of the season.

Nathan Bishop joins Cambridge United after Wycombe Wanderers loan ends

Cambridge United have today confirmed that Bishop has joined on loan for the next six months, after his time at Wycombe Wanderers came to a premature end.

Discussing the move, Bishop said: “I am excited. Cambridge are a good side – you can see the group together working so hard and I am definitely excited to see what we can do.

“The Club have got a great staff and great people in the building so once I got the opportunity to speak to everyone I couldn’t wait to get here.”

Cambridge boss, Garry Monk, said: “We are really pleased to welcome Nathan into the Club. He has excellent pedigree, is hungry to do well and has an infectious character to add to the dressing room. He will be a great addition to the team and I look forward to working with him over the coming months.”

Sunderland sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, also commented on the departure (via the club website), adding: “Nathan made a positive start to the season and it was unfortunate that an early setback has reduced his playing time in recent months.

“After working hard to return to action, it is important that he now plays regularly throughout the remainder of the campaign and we appreciate Wycombe’s understanding in enabling this move. We look forward to supporting Nathan from afar before reviewing his progress this summer.”

Nathan Bishop surely has no future at Sunderland

Bishop made a bright start to life at Wycombe, playing the first three games, before picking up a long-term injury.

Now, he has a real opportunity to get his career back on track. But, whether he will ever truly be part of the Sunderland squad remains to be seen.

You would think that, with Anthony Patterson as the established number one, and Matty Young making incredible progress on loan at Salford City, Bishop would have to do something pretty special to force his way into Regis Le Bris’ plans.

Hopefully we’re wrong and Bishop makes a strong case for himself at Cambridge United. It would be great to see him finally fulfill the potential he showed earlier in his career when he caught the attention of Manchester United.
