A very worrying Sunderland transfer update as Brighton push for Tommy Watson on deadline day

Brighton want to cap their January transfer window with the signing of Sunderland’s Tommy Watson. Here’s the latest on that particular transfer front.

Tommy Watson has become a first-team regular at Sunderland this season, featuring 10 times in the Championship and scoring twice for Regis Le Bris’ side.

Injury has kept him sidelined for several weeks now. Despite that, Brighton want to sign Watson before the winter window slams shut, with the Seagulls having had a couple of bids rejected for Watson.

The 18-year-old was subject of Brighton interest last summer but Sunderland knocked the Seagulls back. It’s thought that Watson has several clubs on alert this time round.

Keith Downie shares transfer update on Tommy Watson to Brighton

Posting on X, Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has revealed the latest regarding a Brighton move for Watson. He writes that ‘the two clubs remain in dialogue’ despite Brighton having had a couple of bids rejected already.

Downie also states that Brighton’s latest offer stands at £8.5million ‘plus significant add-ons’, suggesting that Sunderland could be tempted to cash in given Watson’s contract situation at the Stadium of Light.

When does Tommy Watson’s Sunderland contract expire?

Watson, quite alarmingly, is only under contract at the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2026, meaning that he’ll be entering the final year of his current deal at the end of this campaign.

That’s what makes this potential move so worrying for the Black Cats as it largely makes financial sense to cash in, at the right price of course, and to avoid having to sell for much less come the summer or even in the 2026 January transfer window.

Watson to Brighton looks like the Sunderland deal to keep an eye on ahead of 11pm on Monday night.
