Sunderland have made a big call over the future of 18-year-old ace Tommy Watson.

As the Black Cats head into the January Deadline Day, one of the big decisions that was set to linger over Kristjaan Speakman’s head was the future of Sunderland youngster Tommy Watson.

The 18-year-old winger shone earlier on in the 2024/25 Championship campaign, netting two goals in six starts before an untimely injury that continues to put him out of action from Regis Le Bris’ side.

Nonetheless, despite a lack of action for the Sunderland attacker, he has still drummed up plenty of interest from Brighton, as well as Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

The Seagulls have been the firmest with their approach for Watson, and after a second eight-figure bid was sent Sunderland’s way, they have made a bold decision over the youngster’s future.

Sunderland set to keep Tommy Watson as Kristjaan Speakman rejects lofty Brighton bid

In terms of Sunderland’s top prospects and biggest assets, young winger Watson is close to the summit of the list because of his incredible potential that he showed in glimpses prior to injury.

This is something that Brighton have been aware of for months, and have now sent a second bid worth £12million for the winger, per Ed Aarons on X.

Aarons also confirmed that the bid, which was structured as £9million up front, with £3million in add-ons, has been rejected by Sunderland, with it looking more likely that ‘he will stay at the Championship club’.

It was reported earlier that Brighton were set to make a second bid that would be hard to refuse, but it is clear that Speakman values the youngster to continue his stay on Wearside.

Tommy Watson bid rejection shows the direction that Kristjaan Speakman is taking the Black Cats in

It is certainly unexpected to see Speakman turn down an offer which, for many clubs, would be well within the realms of too good to turn down, and whilst some may believe that such a bid should be accepted, it truly shows the ambition and current direction of Sunderland.

Speakman is building the Black Cats with a clear long term vision, as seen by his previous desires to take a risk on younger players in the transfer market.

In this case, Sunderland have a top asset that, in a year-or-two, could easily be worth double the amount that Brighton offered, and whilst that influx of cash could have helped the Black Cats towards their targets on Deadline Day, it shows that Le Bris and Speakman truly believe that Watson will be a revelation as he gets more game time.
