Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris could be set to make a bold call over one struggling star ahead of Sheffield United.

The Black Cats are gearing up for a clash with Sheffield United where they will hope to respond in positive fashion after their disappointing defeat to Stoke City.

Regis Le Bris’ side will be hoping for a much improved showing in front of goal to last time out, which saw Eliezer Mayenda in particular ‘struggle‘ in front of goal from his right-wing spot, where he was played ahead of Patrick Roberts, who the French boss decided to rest.

In truth, Sunderland are struggling as of late due to various injuries in-and-around the starting side, however some could potentially be nearing a return.

Sunderland injury concerns ahead of Sheffield United clash

One of Sunderland’s main concerns at the moment will be Chris Rigg, with the 17-year-old a major doubt for the next run of games and is set to be on the sidelines for two weeks.

Also, Dan Ballard missed the Stoke City clash through injury and could likely be out of action once again.

Ian Poveda, whose return was expected last week, could still be a good few days away and will unlikely be named in the squad to face the Blades.

Elsewhere, the likes of Alan Browne, Romaine Mundle, Niall Huggins, Jenson Seelt, Salis Abdul Samed, and Ahmed Abdullahi will likely still be unavailable for the upcoming game.

How Regis Le Bris will set up his side to face the Blades

As a result of the lack of options available to Le Bris ahead of the upcoming clash, there will not likely be much rotation in the side.

Because of this, the defence that started against Stoke City will likely be replicated, with Anthony Patterson starting in-between the sticks, whilst Luke O’Nien is on course to be entrusted at centre-back due to Ballard’s likely absence.

As for the midfield, Jobe Bellingham and Dan Neil will certainly regain their place in the starting lineup, and Rigg’s injury could once again see Milan Aleksic earn a second successive start after his showing vs the Potters.

In terms of the front three, the conundrum for Le Bris will be whether he will persevere with Mayenda or look elsewhere. Because of how wasteful the Spaniard was, the French boss may look to opt for a front three of Patrick Roberts, Adil Aouchiche and Wilson Isidor.
