What happened in the Sunderland dressing room at full-time after Coventry City’s two-goal comeback

One Sunderland star has revealed the state of the dressing room after the disappointing draw vs Coventry City.

The Black Cats were on-track to get themselves back to winning ways in the 2024/25 Championship season, however two second-half goals from managerless Coventry City meant that Sunderland were handed a third successive draw.

The two-halves were highly contrasting as the second-stanza saw Sunderland look fairly lightweight in front of goal, notching just three shots in the second 45, with two coming outside the box.

Aside from the incompetence shown in the second half to blow the two-goal lead, there were plenty of positive talking points from the opening half, including the wonderful goal that was brilliantly taken by Wilson Isidor.

Dennis Cirkin also left many fans in disbelief with his 30-yard rocket goal that gave his side a two-goal lead. The Sunderland left-back was more than disappointed with the final result, despite his goal, and he has opened up on the state of the dressing room after the 2-2 draw.

Sunderland defender Dennis Cirkin lifts the lid on the dressing room after Coventry City draw

There certainly will have been plenty of frustration around the Sunderland ranks to throw away a two-goal lead at the Stadium of Light, and that was expressed in a message that Isidor sent on Instagram.

Sunderland goalscorer Cirkin has opened up on the dressing room’s reaction to the game, and it was unexpectedly frosty as you can imagine.

Per Sunderland Echo, Cirkin said: “The mood’s not going to be the best because we’re 2-0 up and they bring it back to 2-2 but I go back to this togetherness of the team.

“You’ve got the captain speaking, you’ve got the manager speaking, everyone’s talking. It’s frustrating but I think everyone knows where the mistakes are, where we can learn from but also the positives that we can take away.

“I see us as a team definitely up there with the quality, the talent, the mindset of this group. So I see us up there and I think we’ve showed that in the last 15 games, where we are at the table but again, it’s a long season, so this break will help us in learning. I think everything’s just about learning.”

Sunderland have the perfect characters to turn around recent blip

The Black Cats have still brilliantly gone eight Championship games without a defeat, however the three successive run of draws could be a cause for concern, particularly in the way it panned out against Coventry City.

Whilst last season such a result could have left the side to start to spiral, the squad that Regis Le Bris has created has much more assurance of having the characters that you need to turn around such a blip.

Sunderland have shown on many occasions this season to be working successfully as a unit, and they must follow suit in the upcoming games, with individuals Luke O’Nien, Dan Neil and Chris Mepham certainly holding some responsibility to turn the tide of the recent poor form.
