Sunderland defender Trai Hume wasn’t entirely happy, despite bagging the winning goal against Millwall.
Sunderland beat Millwall on Saturday afternoon, as they responded in top fashion after their previous heavy defeat prior to the international break.
The Black Cats had many players shine in the game, as Chris Mepham put in an assured defensive performance, but much of the credit should go to Sunderland make-shift right-back Alan Browne, and Trai Hume, who was sent to the left flank amid injury issues that have severely hampered options in the backline.
Hume, whilst putting on a top defensive performance, also bagged the winning goal for Regis Le Bris’ side, and it was a brilliantly well-worked set-piece that found the Northern Irishman lingering on the left side of the box to smash home to give his side the lead. However, despite bagging the winning goal, he was still not fully happy with one thing.

Sunderland’s Trai Hume makes ‘critical’ claim that he should have more goals after Millwall win
Hume has been one of Sunderland’s shining lights this season, whether it be because of his defensive capabilities, or his attacking abilities. However, Hume still thinks there is plenty of room for improvement when it comes to goalscoring for himself.
Per BBC Sounds, Hume was asked about his winning goal after the win against Millwall, but immediately the Sunderland man reflected on his own ambitions, and how he believes he should have notched more bhy this point of the campaign.
Hume said: “I probably could have more now this season based on the chances that I’ve had.
“I wouldn’t say I’m fully critical of myself, but I expect higher standards of myself. I was lucky enough that the chance today was easy enough just to put it in the net.”

Trai Hume ambitions will drive him to be a top player
This season, we have seen several Sunderland players improve exponentially, whether that be Eliezer Mayena, Jobe Bellingham, Dan Neil, or many others in the Black Cats squad. Hume is almost certainly in this bracket as well, and rightly so after the top showings that we have become accustomed to seeing from him.
A lot of this will certainly come from the high levels that Le Bris expects from his side, but also the fact that Hume holds himself to such high standards, as seen in his words to the press.
This will only be a good thing for Hume, and will bode well for such a player with a magnitude of potential that he is still yet to show, despite being incredible this campaign.
