Sunderland were beaten 2-1 on Wednesday night against Huddersfield in a loss which broke a long-standing club record.

Sunderland has now dropped out of the Championship’s top-10 to 11th and sit four points adrift of sixth place Hull after losing to Huddersfield.

This has happened after back-to-back defeats over the last five days to Plymouth and Huddersfield.

The losses have left Tony Mowbray with questions to answer over his tactical set-up and management of this talented team.

But the defeat has also brought with it the breaking of a long-standing stat which won’t be welcomed by Mowbray.

Tony Mowbray breaks unwanted 63-year Sunderland record

Prior to the game on Wednesday night, SAFC Data Analytics took to Twitter with a stat which would’ve provided confidence pre-game.

They wrote: “The last time Sunderland lost a league game to Huddersfield was in 1986. The last home league game we’ve lost was 1960.”

However post-game, it has turned out to make the loss seem even worse and one which Tony Mowbray will be hugely embarrassed by.

With Mowbray already believed to be under pressure, breaking a 63-year-old record will only add to that in his own mind and in the fans.

Mowbray now under-pressure

The defeat to Huddersfield brought with it a series of fans on X calling for Mowbray to be sacked. This after a horrible run of results and the shocking fact it’s now 23 games since a striker scored for Sunderland.

The general feeling is Sunderland has the sort of team which could benefit from a young, exciting and progressive coach and it could be the case that the group of players have simply outgrown Mowbray.

Mowbray isn’t a bad manager at all, but this team are so young and exciting he just can’t seem to get anything out of them right now. Even at the beginning of the season, Jack Clarke’s individual brilliance was what helped Sunderland.

Therefore, unless results improve it seems likely that Mowbray could possibly be shown the door. Something Michael Graham has suggested as he admitted Sunderland wouldn’t be afraid to get rid of him.
