Sunderland clashed with local rivals Middlesbrough in a Championship meeting on Saturday afternoon.
Regis Le Bris will have been keen for his side to get back to winning ways this weekend at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland hosted Middlesbrough in a Championship fixture at the Stadium of Light, aiming to bounce back after a shock 3-2 defeat versus Plymouth Argyle last time out.
The Black Cats had previously enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season before being bested by Wayne Rooney’s men.
A tough outing awaited them on Saturday, however. Middlesbrough beat Sunderland 4-0 in this fixture last season and the home side had beaten Boro just once since an FA Cup match all the way back in 2012.
Michael Carrick’s men came close to opening the scoring inside three minutes when Tommy Conway guided a free header onto the bar.
But while it was Boro who threatened in the early stages, it was the home outfit who took the lead, with Chriss Rigg scoring an auditors backheel in the 24th minute.

Wilson Isidor takes hilarious shot at Middlesbrough after Sunderland
Rigg’s effort was enough to hand Sunderland the three points in a rare victory over their local rivals.
Despite Middlesbrough being just a short journey down the A19, there is much debate over whether or not the Tees-Wear debry is actually a derby,
Le Bris played down the importance of the Middlesbrough fixture prior to Saturday’s clash, suggesting that Newcastle United was a much bigger game.
And while most Middlesbrough fans believe it is a derby, the majority of Sunderland fans tend to think it is not.
As a result, they will likely love what Wilson Isidor did on social media after the win over Boro.
Isidor took to X/Twitter to quote tweet an official post from Sunderland. The player then wrote ‘Derby Winners’ with a line through the word derby, seemingly suggesting he does not believe it is a derby either.
While Sunderland fans will no doubt find that hilarious, it is a shot at Middlesbrough who clearly put more stock in the fixture than the Black Cats.

Wilson Isidor can become key player for Sunderland
Sunderland attacker Isidor arrived from Zenit this summer and looks to be a real statement signing based on his abilities shown at youth level for Sunderland so far.
Isidor netted 19 goals in the Russian Premier League prior to his summer move to England and can no doubt boost Sunderland’s attacking ranks once he gets up to speed.
The 24-year-old played nine minutes against Middlesbrough, taking his league total to 37 minutes of action so far this term.
Le Bris has been cautious in how he has embedded the majority of Sunderland’s summer additions so far but it is clear that once Isidor is playing regularly, he can become a key player for Boro.
