The Black Cats boss has been quizzed on one player’s future after the Stoke City defeat.
Sunderland found themselves on the back of a bitterly disappointing defeat on their travels as they lost 1-0 to Stoke City.
Former transfer target Tom Cannon was on target in the dying embers to hand the Potters a well-needed win after they parted ways with Narcis Pelach, meaning that Regis Le Bris’ side were handed their fourth away defeat of the 2024/25 Championship campaign.
The critical moment in the game saw Eliezer Mayenda set up superbly by Adil Aouchiche with a cross from the left, but the Spaniard was unable to convert a free header just six-yards from Viktor Johansson’s goal.
Sunderland were in fact unlucky to not come away from the game with anything, particularly off the back of a top performance by surprise inclusion Aouchiche, with the Frenchman clearly proving a point to Le Bris after offering a big impact on the left flank.
With it being the youngster’s first start in the Championship this season, Le Bris was questioned over whether his performance has helped change his mind over a potential January exit.

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris outlines Adil Aouchiche future in Wearside ahead of January window
Black Cats attacker Aouchiche arrived on Wearside at the start of the 2023/24 campaign with plenty of promise and potential, as seen by the fact that he had previously been nominated for the Golden Boy Award.
Fast forward a year, and it has been difficult for the 22-year-old to truly stake a claim for a first-team spot, with the likes of Mayenda, as well as the injured pair of Tommy Watson and Romaine Mundle often being deployed on the left-flank. His favoured midfield position also appears impossible to be introduced in due to the form of Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham.
Nevertheless, the Stoke City performance may have helped him turn a corner in his Sunderland career, where he, alongside Milan Aleksic proved to the French boss that they have a future on Wearside.
Le Bris, per Sunderland Echo, was asked about the pair’s future at the club, to which he gave interesting insight on Aouchiche. He said: “Milan [Aleksic] and Adil [Aouchiche] deserved to play this game because they have been connected in the training sessions and this was their opportunity today.
“It is good to have them and their mindset is positive. They were ready to play and I think that they showed many things, many positive things. It’s another experience for them and it’s good for us as a team to have them.
“With Adil, I think it is too early to say what will happen in January. A season is full of many experiences. You can start with an idea but with the evolution of the season, you can change your assessment of the situation. It is probably too early to decide and we’ll see how we can build this second half of the season.”

Adil Aouchiche has the raw talent to tie down regular first-team role
There is only speculation as to why it has taken Aouchiche so long to be properly introduced into the side since Le Bris’ arrival on Wearside, whether it is due to the pair’s previously frosty relationship at FC Lorient, or just personal preference by the French boss.
Nonetheless, it is clear now that Aouchiche certainly has the quality to play at Championship level, and if that Stoke display is something that he can deliver on a consistent basis, then there is every likelihood he could even tie down a regular spot in the side, certainly for the next couple of weeks and beyond Mundle and Watson’s respective returns to the side.
At just 22-years-old, he still has so much potential, and that should be enough to continue pushing the Frenchman to perform like he did throughout the full 90 minutes.
