Sunderland are targeting a deadline day move for Leicester City striker Tom Cannon.

Sunderland were linked with Tom Cannon last summer, when the 21-year-old was playing for Everton.

The Black Cats were among a number of teams trying to sign the Irishman on loan before Leicester City put the transfer race to bed.

The Foxes came in with an £8million bid for Canon, who arrived with a pre-existing injury, and managed to feature just 13 times in the Championship.

Cannon scored twice as Leicester City won the title. But he now appears to be edging towards a move away from the King Power Stadium.

Sunderland have lodged a £5million bid for Cannon. Hull City are thought to have tabled a bid for Cannon, who also has interest from Norwich City and Sheffield United.

So far this summer, Kristjaan Speakman has welcomed five new players to the Stadium of Light, with striker Wilson Isidor being the last.

Another striker signing seems like a priority for Regis Le Bris’ side, but it’s recently come to light that Alexandre Mendy will be staying at Caen despite a summer of links to Sunderland.

Speaking ahead of his side’s Premier League clash vs Aston Villa this weekend, Foxes boss Steve Cooper was quizzed on Cannon’s situation.

Cooper didn’t deny the transfer interest in Cannon, but stated that his potential exit will only be on Leicester City’s terms.

Cooper said: “He’s definitely a good young player and is attracting a lot of attention.

“It is possible [that Cannon leaves]. If he does, it will be the decision the club thinks is best. If not, I’ll enjoy working with him.”

Leicester City’s current valuation of Cannon remains unclear, though it’s claimed that Sunderland are unwilling to go beyond the £5million mark.

Why Steve Cooper’s comments on Tom Cannon could be bad news for Sunderland

With Leicester City having paid £8million for Cannon just last summer, expect the club to be keen to recoup the bulk of that.

And with Sunderland reportedly unwilling to go beyond £5million, and so many teams in the race for Cannon, it could be a difficult pursuit for the Black Cats.

That, as well as Leicester ready to stand firm on their valuation of Cannon, whatever that might be, per Cooper’s comments.

So for Sunderland, deadline day could yet end in disappointment where a potential deal for Cannon is concerned, and with a deal for Mendy dead in the water, and Roko Simic set to join Cardiff City, another striker signing is starting to look difficult for Sunderland.
