Sunderland fell to another defeat this weekend, perhaps their worst of the season so far, and Regis Le Bris did not try to sugarcoat the severity of the situation in his post-match interview.
After flying high all season, the wheels are truly coming off for Sunderland right now. The Black Cats have now lost three of their last six games, and things don’t look like improving any time soon.
Regis Le Bris’ men were flat against Coventry City on Saturday afternoon and were second-best from the get-go as they fell to a 3-0 defeat.
Sunderland fans were unhappy with the performance overall, with Dan Neil taking plenty of criticism, but Le Bris has outlined just how poor his team were and how they need to recover from this situation.

Regis Le Bris’ Coventry admission, with small Sunderland positive to take
Speaking to the club’s official Twitter/X channel after the defeat, the Sunderland manager was forthcoming about the lacklustre showing from his team.
He said: “To be fair, I think Coventry played well, very good football. But this afternoon we were not at the level, it was not the best version of Sunderland. In that situation, we didn’t deserve anything.”
Thankfully, one silver lining was the return of Jenson Seelt, with the Dutch defender getting just over 20 minutes under his belt on the day.
Asked about this, Le Bris added: “The core of the group is very small. It’s good for him because he worked well to reach this new opportunity to play. But at the same time, the team looked tired and exhausted. So now it’s time we refresh in the international break, we need to recover and get some more energy for the team.
“It’s a good reminder. This league is tough. When you’re not at your best level you’ll be punished. It wasn’t expected. Even against Leeds and then Hull we reacted well after that, but maybe this game was too much for us because the rhythm was too high for us.”
Looking ahead, Le Bris underlined how important it is to get back on track and keep Sunderland’s promotion hopes alive after the break.
“I think it’s important to remember how we created momentum before, and think about our foundations and be positive until the end of the season,” he concluded.

Sunderland’s season is falling apart
Sunderland have struggled for consistency since the turn of the year, and they’re getting worse as the weeks go by.
Le Bris touched on the fatigue issues within the Sunderland squad, and he does have a point — Chris Rigg, Patrick Roberts, Dan Neil, and Trai Hume have all played far too much this season and need a break.

We took a look at the minutes Sunderland players have played this season, and it’s clear that the core group of ten players have been involved more than anyone would like. That’s largely due to the injuries suffered by the more peripheral figures in the squad, leaving Le Bris unable to rotate.
This run of form has been horrendous, and has plenty of Sunderland fans feeling disillusioned. That’s not ideal heading into the most important part of the season, and with the play-offs on the horizon.
The international break will be crucial for Sunderland now. They have to regroup, and come back strong for those final eight games to gather any kind of momentum they can.
