Sunderland have a mammoth task ahead of them this weekend, with a trip to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday, with both teams desperate to get back on track.

The Black Cats have now suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this season, after losing to Leeds United last Monday night and then falling to a dismal defeat against Hull City at the weekend.

Many Sunderland players were given a scathing report after that latest result, while Regis Le Bris was criticised once more for the way he handled the game.

Sunderland team news ahead of trip to Hillsborough

Put simply, Sunderland are in a bit of a mess, with three players added to the injury list this week.

Both Enzo Le Fee and Dan Ballard will be out for six to eight weeks, while Jayden Danns has now been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Aji Alese is also out until the end of the season with a broken leg.

But, the good news is Romaine Mundle is back, and Tommy Watson has returned to training, too.

Regis Le Bris has been criticised for his handling of Le Fee in particular, with Danny Collins claiming the injury was inevitable given the way the Frenchman was overworked.

Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday head-to-head record

These two teams have met a whopping 131 times over the years, and the head-to-head record between the teams is surprisingly even. Sunderland have won 52 games, Sheffield Wednesday have won 50, and there have been 29 draws between them.

The evenness of this contest has remained over the last few seasons, with the two teams trading blows back and forth with great balance.

Sunderland won the reverse fixture back in August with a resounding 4-0 scoreline. However, last season, the away side triumphed on both occasions, with Wednesday winning 2-0 at the Stadium of Light, and Sunderland winning 3-0 at Hillsborough.

In the last ten meetings, Sunderland have won four, the Owls have won five, and there has been one draw.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Sunderland predictions

Our predictions for Sheffield Wednesday vs Sunderland include a valuable lesson for Regis Le Bris, and some major changes in the Sunderland lineup for the game.

It’s worth noting that Danny Rohl will be desperate for revenge after the drubbing the Owls received earlier in the season, and the Owls have definitely come a long way since then.

It won’t be easy under the lights at Hillsborough, and we expect a feisty, very even contest. We expect a 2-2 draw here.
