Sunderland set to take huge hit on £2.5m player as Nick Barnes makes damning January transfer prediction

Several Sunderland players appear to be facing an uncertain future in the build up to January. Nick Barnes thinks one player is nailed on to leave the club.

Sunderland, whilst being very stringent with their financials, especially in terms of wages, have spent their share of money in the last few transfer windows.

On deadline day, Sunderland reportedly spent £3million on Milan Aleksic, making him the club’s most expensive signing of the Kyril Louis-Dreyfus era.

Then last January, £2million was spent on Romaine Mundle, with money spent on a handful of players in the summer transfer window of 2023.

There’s certainly been some mixed results. On the whole though, Sunderland are spending their money very well, with a number of players looking set to hand the club a huge profit in the transfer market one day.

One player who will not do that though is Nazariy Rusyn. Ahead of January, it’s already been claimed that Rusyn is up for sale at Sunderland and is likely to leave, with the Ukrainian having played just six times in the Championship this season, all off the bench.

Nick Barnes makes Nazariy Rusyn transfer prediction at Sunderland

Speaking on Total Sport, BBC pundit Nick Barnes has given some thoughts on the upcoming January transfer window, and who might be leaving the Stadium of Light.

And Rusyn was the one who Barnes has backed to leave in the New Year. He said: “I think there’s every chance Rusyn will be on the move.

“They’re not going to get much. Whether it’s a loan or he moves permanently. I think Nazariy Rusyn is a player that will probably move in January.”

Sunderland now look set to take a big hit on Rusyn, who the Black Cats reportedly signed for a fee around £2.5million from Ukrainian outfit Zorya in 2023.

Do Zorya have a sell-on clause for Nazariy Rusyn at Sunderland?

Selling Rusyn might not be so simple for Sunderland who’ll want to reclaim as much of that £2.5million as possible.

But with Rusyn having failed to impress in his 27 total league appearances for the Black Cats, in which he’s scored just twice and assisted once, getting any significant fee is going to be tough.

And at 26 years old, Rusyn can’t be regarded as a very young player either, so it looks like Louis-Dreyfus will have to take a hit on Rusyn.

Another worrying factor here is that Zorya have a sell-on fee for Rusyn, as previously reported by Sunderland Nation, meaning that Sunderland could end up with a lot less than £2.5million for Rusyn.
