Sunderland are poised to complete a seven-figure transfer, just before deadline day.

Sunderland look like they’re enjoying a strong end to the January transfer window with Leo Hjelde having arrived, and another in Romaine Mundle looking poised to sign as well.

The former Spurs talent currently plays in Belgium with Standard Liege, but Fabrizio Romano revealed last night that Sunderland had agreed a deal to sign the 20-year-old.

And now Keith Downie says that the 20-year-old is on his way to Wearside to undergo a medical ahead of a £2million transfer.

Keith Downie says Romaine Mundle on his way to Sunderland for medical

It’s been a busy 24 hours or so for Sunderland.

They got their first January signing over the line in Hjelde and have all but seen Alex Pritchard’s move to Birmingham City go through.

And now the club have acted fast to get a deal for Mundle over the line.

Sky Sports reporter Downie says that Mundle is now flying in to England so that he can undergo his medical at Sunderland, whilst also revealing that the Black Cats are paying £2million for his services.

Mundle looks set to become Michael Beale‘s second signing as Sunderland boss, and the under-fire 43-year-old will surely be pleased with his side’s late activity in the transfer market this month.

Beale relieved some pressure on his shoulders with a positive 3-1 win over Stoke City in the Championship last time out.

It left Sunderland in 7th place of the table and level on points with Coventry City in 6th, but behind on goal difference.

The Black Cats are cooking now

It’s not been an easy few weeks for Sunderland; with the managerial change and the backlash over the past few weeks, and the lack of January transfer activity up until now.

But the Sunderland owners remain very ambitious and this £2million fee for Mundle is representative of that ambition.

The club will have done their due diligence on the player and with Sunderland being a club who don’t often throw this much money around, they must surely be confident in Mundle’s ability and future potential.

He arrives at a time when Jack Clarke is being heavily linked with a move away and so Mundle might be viewed as a long-term successor to him.

And he has big boots to fill if that’s the case, but this second half of the season will be about bedding Mundle into the first-team picture and into Championship football, after a tough couple of years for the ex-Spurs man.
