Sunderland have submitted a bid for a Premier League striker as they look to bring in goalscoring firepower before the deadline.
Regis Le Bris’ side have had an impeccable start to the 2024/25 Championship campaign, with three wins and clean sheets on the bounce.
It has been quite a surprising start from the Black Cats, who played their third Championship game against Burnley without winger Jack Clarke, who has now moved to Premier League side Ipswich Town.
As for the ongoing striker situation, Sunderland are nowhere close to attaining the services of Alexandre Mendy amid long-term interest, however the need and urgency for an attacker has been somewhat quashed by the brilliant start from Eliezer Mayenda in leading the line.
Despite Mayenda’s form, there is still a likelihood that a striker will be brought in before the twilight of the transfer deadline, with a Premier League striker wanted by the Black Cats after a seven-figure bid was launched.

Sunderland launch £5million bid for Leicester City striker Tom Cannon
As Sunderland looked towards alternative targets to lead the line for the 2024/25 Championship campaign, Leicester City forward Tom Cannon was a name mentioned that the Black Cats were interested in, however a move appeared difficult as a result of strong interest from Luton Town.
However, Sunderland have stepped up in their efforts to sign the former Everton youth player after they reportedly ‘made a bid of around £5m’, per John Percy on X.
The Black Cats face fierce competition from other Championship sides as Norwich City, Stoke City and Sheffield United are all ‘expected to make offers ahead of Friday’s deadline’.

Tom Cannon can assure goals at Championship level
Whilst it has been brilliant for Mayenda to hit the ground running at the start of the 2024/25 season after Le Bris gave him the opportunities to lead the line, it was always expected that the Spaniard would just be utilised as a stop-gap.
In terms of strikers that are available at this moment, there are few better than Tom Cannon, who notably scored eight goals in just 20 appearances for Preston North End in the 2022/23 Championship season, and Kristjaan Speakman has done well to highlight the Englishman as a sufficient striker.
There are still many hurdles before Sunderland look set to attain the services of the 21-year-old, however his assured goal scoring ability at Championship level should be enough for Sunderland to heavily consider going to the wire if that is needed in order to sign Cannon, whilst evading the interest from alternative clubs.
