Sunderland turned down the opportunity to re-sign Amad Diallo this summer.

That’s according to Sunderland Nation, who have reported that the Ivorian was eager to return to Wearside on loan.

Amad enjoyed a season-long loan with Sunderland last year and proved to be one of the Championship’s best players, scoring 14 goals and providing three assists in 39 matches.

The midfielder’s future remained unclear for much of the summer transfer window, though it was reported that the Black Cats were keen to bring him back to the club.

However, Amad was heavily linked with a number of ‘bigger’ clubs and a move to the Stadium of Light soon looked off the cards when he picked up an injury in pre-season.

While it wasn’t a surprise to see Amad remain at Manchester United beyond last week’s deadline, the report claims the youngster wanted to return to Sunderland and complete his rehab up north.

Tony Mowbray was initially very happy with that arrangement ahead of a potential return to full fitness in late October/early November for Amad, however Sunderland instead decided to wait until January.

Could Sunderland bring Amad Diallo back to the club?

The ‘incredible’ 21-year-old has made it very clear that Sunderland is his ideal destination if Erik ten Hag opts to send him out on loan again.

However, the Wearside outfit have definitely taken a big risk in waiting till January. Amad could have a lot more options by then and Sunderland’s position in the Championship table may affect his decision.

The former Atalanta prospect certainly hasn’t been replaced by the Black Cats, with Jobe Bellingham or Bradley Dack the most likely to take up that position behind the striker.

While both – Jobe in particular – have got off to a promising start, it would be very surprising if Amad wasn’t to walk straight back into the team if Sunderland can sign him in January.
