The Black Cats are set to miss out on the signing of one top EFL attacker.

Following the early blockbuster signing of Enzo Le Fee on loan from Italian giants Roma, Sunderland’s January transfer window has seen several targets go elsewhere.

Tom Cannon and Ben Brereton Diaz were both being hotly pursued by Sunderland in the early stages of the January transfer window, but both opted to move to promotion rivals Sheffield United.

Chuba Akpom was also a player wanted by Sunderland, but it is reported that the current Ajax striker does not want to join up on Wearside.

Following the inability to get both of those deals done, there is a sense of deja vu as, this time, relegation-scrapping Hull City are set to make the ambitious loan signing of one of Sunderland’s top transfer targets.

Sunderland set to miss out on Louie Barry as Aston Villa man undergoes Hull City medical

Sunderland are still yet to bring in an attacker with the January transfer window edging ever closer to its conclusion.

Whilst earlier on in the window Sunderland were linked with Aston Villa attacker Louie Barry, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Stockport County, scoring 15 goals in League One under the stewardship of Hatters boss Dave Challinor, they now look set to miss out on the 21-year-old.

Per James Hoggarth on X, the Aston Villa youngster looks set for a medical ahead of a move to the East Yorkshire outfit.

Barry will be joining up with Ruben Selles’ Hull City on a loan move, and whilst Hoggarth suggests that ‘no further details are available’ at this stage, it is not expected that it will include an option to buy.

Hull City could offer Louie Barry key thing that Regis Le Bris couldn’t sacrifice

With the quality and promise of Barry, it is clear that Aston Villa needed to guarantee one thing when sending their prospect out on loan, and that is game time.

Whilst at this time Sunderland’s options on the left flank look threadbare, the soon-to-return Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson will be at the top of the pecking order, with or without Barry.

Because of Hull City’s lack of wingers, due to the long-term injuries handed to former Black Cats target Liam Millar and Mohamed Belloumi, the Tigers could ensure that Barry would be their main focal point in the final third, something that Sunderland simply couldn’t do.
