Blackburn Rovers have made an official approach to sign Danny Batth.

That’s according to Alan Nixon, who has reported that the Championship club have informed Sunderland of their interest and are eager to offer him a two-year contract.

Batth has been heavily linked with a move away this summer and Tony Mowbray had already confirmed that he would likely leave Wearside, despite a stellar campaign last time out.

The ‘amazing’ 32-year-old was named Sunderland’s Player of the Season as he made 40 appearances in the second tier, however he now doesn’t look to be in the club’s plans and has already been told his contract won’t be extended next summer.

Batth has been left out of the Black Cats’ league fixtures so far this season and had been the subject of Rovers’ interest for a number of weeks.

Rovers’ financial situation previously made a move for Batth look particularly difficult. However, Nixon has claimed that Sunderland are willing to let him leave for free in order to shift his wages off their books.

With the Wearside outfit open to letting the centre-back leave, there is unlikely to be any problems and the deal could go through once Blackburn’s owners give the green light to make the move.

Sunderland look to move on their most experienced defender in Danny Batth to Rovers

Sunderland will be left with only two defenders over the age of 23, though Lynden Gooch could also be on his way out over the next week.

The American has caught the eye of QPR, who are reportedly looking to sign Gooch ‘if the deal is right’. The London outfit had also been linked with Batth, though they are yet to make a concrete move for his signature.
