Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris faced the press on Wednesday afternoon ahead of his side’s Championship clash against Burnley on Friday night. And of course, rumoured transfer target Tom Cannon was a talking point.
Ahead of Regis Le Bris’ previous presser, all the talk was about Enzo Le Fee. He’s since joined on loan from Roma, and now fans are taking about Tom Cannon and whether he might be the next player to arrive at the Stadium of Light.
It’s rumoured that Sheffield United and Sunderland are bidding £13million to sign Cannon during this January transfer window. Though details over whether it’d be an initial loan move remain somewhat unclear.
Since, it’s been reported that Everton could re-sign Cannon in what would be a shock move for David Moyes’ side, following the former Sunderland boss’ return to Goodison Park. Though how likely or how truthful those reports are remains to be seen.

Regis Le Bris responds to Tom Cannon rumours at Sunderland
Le Bris sat down in front of the media on Wednesday, earlier than he usually does in the week with his side in action against Burnley on Friday night. And it didn’t take long for Cannon to come up in conversation, though Le Bris rather predictably gave a vague answer to the rumours.
Asked to comment on Cannon’s speculated move to Sunderland, Le Bris said: “I like good players. It’s still interesting to watch good players in the league but at the minute we can’t comment on anything.” Then asked again to comment on the speculation regarding Cannon, Le Bris added: “Speculation is speculation, so I can’t comment on anything about that.”
Tom Cannon didn’t want to leave Stoke City
Cannon is arguably the biggest transfer story in the Championship right now. There’s likely more than just Sunderland, Sheffield United, and Everton interested, but the 22-year-old didn’t want to leave Stoke City.
He scored nine goals in 22 Championship games for the Potters before being officially recalled by Leicester City on Wednesday. Journalist Mark Holmes revealed on X that the Irishman wanted to stay at the bet365 Stadium.
Holmes posted on X: “Tom Cannon got a call from Leicester at 11.30 last night to say he’d been recalled. Cannon had told Leicester he was happy to stay at Stoke, but Leicester understandably want to assess all options.”
But the decision is out of Cannon’s hands unfortunately. Still, a move to either Sunderland or Sheffield United would be an exciting one, and it could see him promoted to the Premier League in 2025.
